If you want to just slightly enhance the look of your desktop try Cleardock. Cleardock does exactly what it says, it makes the background of your dock transparent. You can also use it to give that background a coulour of your choosing if you prefer. It's a free download so feel free to give it a try, but as always when messing with your system: make sure you back up first!
P.S.: You need to reboot for Cleardock to work.
